Ultimate Local Winners: July 13th-19th, 2021

By Jack "Jackie Peanuts" Moore | 07/20/21

A whopping 76 tournaments of at least 50 players were held across the world on Smash.GG alone, a record since we began putting together Ultimate local winner maps here at PGstats.com in June. Note that we are working on integrating Challonge and other bracket managers into our data, but that feature is unlikely to be ready until the end of the summer. For now, let's dive into the qualifying locals, covering tournaments in the United States, Canada, France, Spain, Austria, and Australia.

Map 1: United States and Canada

This week featured 12 tournaments of at least 100 players, all held in the United States. For the second week in a row, SoCal weekly Mega Smash Mondays was the biggest tournament of the week, and it was won for the second week in a row by Richter main T3 DOM. ROB main Domnique won the 129-entrant Big Porch 3 in Portland, Oregon, and ZD won a 128-player Grind at Xanadu in Maryland.
Chicago held its first regional since quarantine on Saturday, Hitpoint Summer: July, won by Chicagoland Ness main ATATA over Nebraska Young Link main SKITTLES!!, who won the 118-entrant Tripoint Smash 105 weekly the night before. Philadelphia Joker main Mercury pulled off a successful invasion at Tuesday's 113-entrant Ultimate @ Xanadu over Pink Fresh and ZD. Earlier in the week, Viri won 109-entrant Chicago local Ignition 226. In Texas, Cloud main Niko took Odyssey 2 over 108 contenders, including top-ranked Houston Bayonetta player Shadow_PR. Samus main Teaser won a pair of Dallas-area events, including the 102-entrant Ultimate Shockwave 70.
Falco main Tilde won Tristate's biggest event of the week, the 101-entrant Xeno 207, over Quidd and LeoN. Finally, rounding out the 100-entrant events, Chrom and Ike player Darkholme won BYOC 2: The Comeback in Louisville, Kentucky over Jin and Kain.
Roy, ROB and Wolf continue to excel in the post-quarantine meta, winning five tournaments each this week (including international, which we'll highlight below). But the champion of this week was Ness, picking up a whopping seven victories across the globe this week from six different players, with Scend being the only Ness with multiple qualifying wins this week. Rounding out the character top five is Mario, who won four tournaments this week, bolstered by Kurama (formerly known as Prodigy) and his two wins in NorCal.

Map 2: Europe + Australia

Spain makes its first appearance on one of our local maps, with Dark Samus main Sisqui taking the 72-player Barcelona event Max CP 640 over AndresFn and Pepo. Austria makes its second appearance, with Duck Hunt main SkWiirel taking the 50-entrant Smash @ Respawn 67 over Tsuba and Ryser.
France remains the most active tournament scene in our database, with another four events checking in this week. Two of the winners, Glutonny and PeW, return from last week's graphic. For the new additions, Wolf main Greil took the 59-entrant Zenith 3 in Lyon and Zelda main ALtek (the second Zelda to win an event in France in two weeks after Naskino last week) took the 63-entrant DOSE2SEL July.
Finally, Poppt1 won Australia's only qualifying tournament this week, a 51-entrant tournament in Cannington near Perth.
